来日公演音源で評判の高いXAVELレーベルより、2017年来日公演の、4日となる9月13日、グランキューブ大阪と、最終日となる9月14日、東京国際フォーラムでのライブを、いずれもステレオ・サウンドボード音源にてコンプリート収録したカップリング・タイトルが、永久保存プレス6CDでここに。
まず同レーベルでは、マルチIEMマトリクス音源などがここ近年おなじみの中、本作はさらにそれらを上回るリアル・ステレオ・サウンドボード音源で、2公演ともに、オフィシャル・ライブ盤と比べて何も遜色のないサウンド・クオリティーによるもの。
そして今回の来日は『IMAGES AND WORDS』リリース25周年、アニバーサリー・ワールド・ツアーの一環となるもので、本ツアーは同アルバムの完全再現をメインとし、すでに世界各国のファンから大絶賛されているもの。そしてその3部構成のライブは、第1部「通常形式」・第2部「IMAGES AND WORDS完全再現」、そしてアンコールとなっており、まず第1部は通常のコンサート同様、各アルバムからセレクトされたものながら、日本ではストーリー再現を味わえなかった『THE ASTONISHING』の「The Gift of Music」や「Our New World」も披露され、『FALLING INTO INFINITY』からの「Hell’s Kitchen」は14年ぶりの復活。さらに「The Bigger Picture」も2017年になって初めて演奏された曲で、ジャコ・パスの「Portrait Of Tracy」を導入にした「As I Am」ではMETALLICAの「Enter Sandman」も導入したりと、斬新なアレンジも随所に。
そしてメインの第2部『IMAGES AND WORDS』の完全再現は、25年間をタイムワープするイントロから導かれ、アルバムの曲順通りに進行。壮大にして華麗な名曲群を本生100％サウンドで再現しており、しかもただの再現を超えた拡張版となっているのは、さらに第3部で「A Change Of Season」も13年ぶりにフル再現することで、まさに完成形。
なお今回の来日全5公演は、コンセプト・ショーゆえセット・構成に変化はないものの、さらに初回50セット限定で、2日目広島公演開場前のサウンドチェックを収録したボーナス1CD-Rもプラス。
ここでの本番さながらの緊張感の高いリハーサルも、ファンならやはり要チェック。
